For the last two decades, both indirectly and directly, the main Western powers have been negotiating with Iran for it to give up (temporarily) its nuclear ambitions against the lifting of sanctions and other valuable relief to the regime of the mullahs.
Invariably, the Iranian negotiators came out winners in the Levantine bazaar negotiations they are the world experts in. President Obama (do you remember, the one of the infamous red lines over Syria?) finally caved in and signed the most absurd one-sided treaty that rivals Chamberlain’s Munich. The Iranians gave up virtually nothing and obtained nearly everything. Only one man had the audacity and the eloquence to stand up against his American partners and shout out at the gate of the palace of the king that this was not a treaty, but a document of surrender. To no avail. All the great powers were keen to put an end to the Iranian Nuclear matter and push the envelope to their successors. They said that there was no other workable option on the table, basically admitting that Iran was not beatable with military means.
A decade later that same man, Benyamin Netanyahu, was able to call the Teheran bluff. Despite heavy American pressure once again, and only because the Iranians made the mistake to brazenly attack Israel, repeatedly, with a potentially lethal cocktail of hundreds of drones, rockets, and ballistic missiles, Israel showed that the Iranian regime is a naked king. By first destroying the threat from the proxies, Hamas and Hezbollah, and then going after Iran’s missile production facilities and its air defences, Israel demonstrated that the only option to take away the nuclear threat is not to appease the serpent, but to cut its head. While Israel didn’t yet cut off the proverbial head, again because of pressure from the White House which didn’t want a major crisis days before the elections, it has showed the world how to do it. May it happen very soon. Kol hakavod Mr. Netanyahu!

Biden’s Squandered Opportunity
Winston Churchill is said to have remarked that one should never miss the opportunity lurking behind a disaster. Perhaps, hopefully, we are missing something… but Saturday night’s Iranian attack on Israel could have been a golden opportunity for the US alliance to hit back at Iran strongly and at a minimum dial back Iran’s nuclear program for several years, or ideally, eventually provoke a regime change.
Different from say the Gazans, who overwhelmingly supported Hamas, at least until their cities became scorched earth, the Iranian people by and large do not support Teheran’s regime. Over the last decade, many grassroot Iranian groups have tried to challenge their bloodthirsty government and have pleaded for the United States to support them. A strong combined attack on Iran’s infrastructure and nuclear weapons program could have provided the ideal catalyst for a popular movement that wants to overthrow the Mullas’ regime. But instead of grabbing the opportunity that Iran served on a silver plate, Biden and his administration didn’t waste time to ask Israel not to respond. “Take a Win” is what Biden reportedly told Netanyahu.
True, the coalition that worked so effectively alongside the IDF to thwart Iran’s aggression is a win. But wars are not won only by defending well. At the right time, the opportunity must be grabbed to inflict serious damage on Iran and decapitate the octopus that is sowing terror, and war in the entire middle east. Biden is a key friend of Ukraine, doesn’t he know that Iran is supplying the drones that Russia is using against Ukraine? Doesn’t he know that Iran is a key player in the axis of evil that includes Russia, China, North Korea?
Does he really want to wait until Iran tests a nuclear weapon, thereby making it a lot more difficult to deal with? Didn’t he learn the lessons of history, that tyrants won’t get appeased?
What a colossal failure of judgment.
Statesmanship is Dead in Washington, DC.
Until not so long ago, it was considered bad practice to in any way criticise a President during a war or even a foreign military operation. Right or wrong it’s my country. No more.
Despite the fact that the repercussions of the bringing to justice arch terrorist Suleimani have so far been much better that one could expect (see about it below), the usual liberals can’t help themselves in trying to find ways to criticise the Administration. The Democrats and the media are excruciating to cross examine administration officials to look for the ‘real’ reason, or lack thereof, behind the decision to take out the Iranian general at large. Where was the evidence that American lives were at imminent risk? Which embassies were being targeted? How credible was the intelligence?
This is the macro equivalent of today’s practice in many western countries to prosecute householders who hit back at thieves and criminals who break into their property: why did the shoot? Was the intruder really dangerous? Wasn’t there another way to stop him?
The same back seat drivers will then spill hypocritical tears after terrorist attacks happen and innocent victims die: imagine if 9/11 could have been avoided by taking out the terrorists before they acted, based on compelling but perhaps not ‘liberal-proof’ evidence.
The world is a dangerous place, there are many bad players and bad states around. Ignoring evil or turning the other cheek is not going to stop tomorrow’s mass murderers, armed with lethal weapons. On the contrary, teaching them a lesson, making them think twice about moving freely, and showing terrorists and rogue countries that there are going to be consequences for foul play, will act as a deterrent. Consider the aftermath of Suleiman’s death:
- Iran probably had to beg the Americans, via swiss channels, to let them strike at an empty airbase to pretend it was taking vengeance
- Scores of Iranians died in the funeral processions
- Iran downs a civilian jet, denies it did it for days and then has to admit responsibility after overwhelming evidence shows it lied through its teeth
- The real Iranian street is furious and calls for death to its dictators
- And counting…
Not bad for what an American Senator had the guile to call ‘the act that made America impotent!’
